We
went to see John Barrowman last night on South Bank for a recording of
'Friday Night is Music Night' for Radio 2. Three hours of musical
theatre show stoppers and Christmassy tunes. It's being broadcast on
Friday night (22nd Dec) on BBC Radio 2 at 7.30pm.
B) He looks good in specs
C) He thinks Santa is teh gay.
D) He made an obligatory Torchwood reference that passed over 75% of the audiences heads.
My favourite points of the evening were John saying that Santa could indeed be gay - "those shiny boots!" - which didn't go down too well with the majority of the audience who were blue rinced grandmas; the remaining 25% of the audience which seemed to consist of Doctor Who fans and hot young men thought it quite fun.
The best songs had to be 'I am what a I am' from La Cage aux Folles and for me 'O Holy Night', you don't hear that carol often enough in the UK (is it a US hymn?) for my liking.
In John's intro to 'A Perfect Year' from Sunset Boulevard he mentioned how great his year had been and talked about Torchwood (grannies go "What's that Cyril?") then he went into the "The 21st century is when it all changes and you've got to be ready" bit from the programme - hysterical. Whether that will make the final radio recording I don't know.
At the end the whole audience sang a carols medley. John's acting out the line "don our gay apparel" had me in sitches.
A good night.
I dislike most reality TV, it's lowest common denominator telly. With so many channels to choose from I try, *I really do*, to be a little bit discriminiating. That said, I am totally hooked on "How do you solve a problem like Maria?" on BBC1, Saturday nights.
Aside from the obvious attractions of the gorgeous John Barrowman* as one of the panelists I thought I wouldn't like the show - but I do.
10 girls compete to secure the lead of Maria in a new Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber West End production of "The Sound of Music". We already have a favourite in our house that we are rooting for - "Go Connie!"
Having any sort of pitch and tone can be a mixed blessing though whilst watching; every bum note seems magnified ten fold through the TV. We particularly didn't like Mez (or whatever her name was) who sounded a) off and b) looked like she was trying to be Charlotte from 'Sex and the City' too damn hard. Come vote time she was out.
A totally silly bit of TV but good silly.
*Such a pity he's not interested in girls, damn.
