I finished term exhausted but happy - the first year is nearly over and soon I will no longer be just a first year. Big things are happening at college at the moment re. the structure of our course (on which I was invited to panel meetings to represent the first year along with 3 others) so more on that when it happens.
But money - or lack of - dictates I must work the holidays (and fit in my two essays somewhere) so I am back working in the City for three weeks. I'm back where I am been before but this time in the relatively quiet backwater of compliance. What a change from the trading floor. No shouting or swearing or liberty taking. In fact most people speak at whisper level if they do speak - people don't really talk to one another at all here, strange. That said, everyone is nice, my boss especially. He actually uses the two magic words - please and thank you - repeatedly. My hours are not crazy either but that also means less pay and I need every penny right now.
I've been blogging quite a lot the past few days over at Littlespaces so I won't bore you with more house related stuff here...
My wish list for my holiday pay include:
Paying off some of my overdraft
An A3 Epson 2400 printer
A roll of giclee paper (for the printer) to make fine art prints with
Text books on Photoshop CS3 and Adobe Lightroom by Martin Evening
A big book on Illustrator CS3, which I plan to teach myself from - any recommended titles?
A pair of perfect work shoes
A 'FI/Icon' dining room light in orange or pinky-red by Ferruccio Laviani for Kartell
Vintage 1960s/1970s wallpaper
Two (colours not chosen yet) 'La Marie' chairs by Phillipe Starck for Kartell
Two white 'Componibili 2 Element' bedside cabinets (very Space 1999) by Anna Castelli Ferrieri for Kartell
I better get back to earning that money then ;)
... for a few days to earn some money before college starts again on Monday.
This means several things: my boss asking me to work 'New York hours' when I am in London as he is in my favourite city this week; getting lunch at Wasabi and paying £5 for some rice and nori with some coloured bits in; wearing a suit; dishing the dirt with my with superior's son (who is an exception to the wunch rule)... who got into a fight last night and is sporting a black eye...
I think I confused a guy today who was trying to set up a meeting with a new colleague of ours, a Mr Pete Tyler... "You could try to call him" say I "but I think he's moved to an alternate universe." *blank look* He obviously needs to watch more DW goddammit.
I'm looking forward to going back to college but my head doesn't. I can't sleep, I keep thinking about all the things we have to do (paint study walls, get builders, buy food, try to see some friends, research my next two projects on ad campaigns, feel guilty that my other half has no money and is paying the mortgage for two of us as I am a skanky student), oi, I am tired! As I said in my last post someone please give me my mojo back. I need to get a routine as Gamba said today.
This weekend I hope to get some preliminary college work shot on the theme of 'space'. A very wide brief. I'm thinking spaces inbetween things or maybe negative spaces. I am also very tempted to run away to Kent and photograph huts and nuclear powerstations.
Dolly friends, I am keenly feeling the lack of an RBL - can't wait until the dark haired primagirls come out, me want one but I am poor, oh noes.
Lastly, I would link to it but this is a family blog... but has anyone seen all the palava on tinternet about the guy and his horsewife? You got it, a horsewife. Hide my eyes and pass the brain bleach.
I finally got my next project approved at college yesterday - I'm can take pictures of my friends holding their Blythes for my documentary project. Now to set up times and do some more research... should be fun though... it's just getting everyone together. Oh and we have a four week deadline for conception, shooting, colour printing (which I've never done before) and putting on our show. Even our lecture thinks the course is too short - which may be relevant on critique day when half the class don't show up...
My awfully boring essay was handed in yesterday. Oh my god, I'd forgotten how hard academic writing is and how long it takes. I finished it 9pm on Sunday night - after working on it for three weeks. My next essay is due in in exactly one month, so next week I mount the essay merry-go-round again. Bugger, why can't we just take nice pictures? ;(
I at least have a night or two off now so I'm going out to dinner tonight, and on Thursday I think I might go see 'The Prestige' at the cinema. Is it any good?
On the home front the structural engineers came and said what we wanted to do to our new flat wasn't structural (yay we can knock some walls down) but they needed the original plans to the building to confirm it (boo). That means getting Southwark Council, our ultimate freeholder of our building, to get off their arses and actually do something, which of course means a delay. Grrr.
Our lounge though *is* looking different... Bubb has scraped off three quarters of the incredibly old woodchip painted over wallpaper. It takes an age to do! Then we have sugar-soap to scrub down with, holes to fill, priming to do and finally 2 nice clean coats of paint. Preparation is everything folks!
Oh well back to the coal mines...
