Before, it's lovely. It's one of the most elaborate types of plaster cornice called an "Enriched" cornice.

Sitting Room Ceiling - Day Two (3)

Insulation going in. We need twice as much as we though as the void is SO big. The Victorians had nothing obviously as coal was cheap, servants were cheap and they had nothing 'fire proof' to use.

All the rubbish from our old lath and plaster ceiling. Sadly the ceiling is shot and full of cracks. Hence replacement. However we are trying to keep - desperately - our original cornices which I love. But it does mean we can install much needed sound and heat insulation - the Victorians didn't have those!

Kitchen colours

I've had this scheme in mind for two years. Always with the yellow Cow Parsley wallpaper but I was unsure what shades of grey to go for, and after my long search for the perfect neutral grey if it even existed. Greys can have undertones of brown, pink, green and most often blue. I wanted an abolutely neutral grey in three shades (light for walls, mid for cabinets / dresser and dark for inside cabinetry / dresser). Now I have found them all, yipee! My new favourite paint company is <a href="http://www.marstonstore.com/marslang/Default.aspx?categoryid=7&region=UK">Marston & Langinger</a>, eco friendly, waterbased, great colour range and they have the elusive neutral grey... the holy grail of greys!

Tester trials

My many many tester pot trials. I think we have now found perfect colours for all of the rooms. Picking wallpaper was easy by comparison! Part of the problem for us is daylight. Daylight on the coast (we are two streets from the sea) is very blue. Different from daylight in urban inland cities. Grey is a problematic colour as it has so many undertones and can tend to look blue very easily in seaside light.
